England vs Italy match preview & prediction

Match preview

In a repeat of EURO 2020 final fixture, England will be looking for their first Nations League victory when they welcome Italy to the Midlands on Saturday night.

The match will be played behind closed doors following the crowd trouble surrounding their last meeting at EURO 2020 final at Wembley last summer, which ended with the Azzurri winning on penalties.

Gareth Southgate’s side has struggled in this month with a surprising loss in Hungary followed by a late draw in Germany to salvage their first point in the group.

Italy leads the group after defeating Hungary in midweek and will hope to consolidate on their lead when they visit England.

England vs Italy team news

England midfielder Kalvin Phillips was forced to withdraw from the Germany tie due to a collision with Schlotterbeck, which Southgate termed as a “serious dead leg,” and it is tough to see the Leeds United man playing on Saturday.

Southgate is also hoping that Phil Foden will have a negative COVID-19 test in time to return to the team, as with James Justin (calf) too. Although Fikayo Tomori’s hamstring injury may keep him out for a little longer, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been left out to take a well-deserved break.

Meanwhile, Italy has let Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Belotti leave for vacation ahead of Saturday’s encounter, but the visitors have no new concerns against Hungary.

Alessandro Florenzi, Francesco Acerbi, and Gianluca Scamacca were all significant absences from the squad on matchday two, and Mancini is certain to make further changes, particularly in the midfield.
