Controversy Casts Shadow Over Italian Stars’ Euro ‘24 Hopes

As Euro 2024 looms on the horizon, Italian footballers Nicolò Fagioli, Sandro Tonali, and Nicolò Zaniolo have found themselves embroiled in a gambling scandal that could jeopardize their dreams of representing their nation in the upcoming tournament.

Reports indicate that Nicolò Fagioli of Juventus and Sandro Tonali of Newcastle have allegedly participated in football gambling, a clear violation of the sport’s regulations. Fagioli, a rising star, may face a potential 10-month ban, potentially ruling him out of Euro 2024.

Meanwhile, Tonali is exploring cooperation with FIGC and the Turin Prosecutor’s office in hopes of negotiating a plea deal. However, this could result in an 18-month suspension, casting doubt on his participation should Italy qualify.

In a surprising turn of events, Nicolò Zaniolo of Aston Villa vehemently maintains his innocence. Zaniolo’s representatives assert that his gambling activities were confined to poker and blackjack, avoiding any football-related bets. If these claims are substantiated, Zaniolo might avoid a ban, preserving his chances of representing Italy in the upcoming European Championships.

The situation remains dynamic, with Tonali slated to face the FIGC Prosecutor this week. Italian football enthusiasts await the final rulings on these players’ eligibility for Euro 2024.
