Sao Tome vs Nigeria match preview & prediction

Match preview

Nigeria will face the small island nation of Sao Tome and Principe on Monday in their second fixture of Group A’s 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Super Eagles barely escaped an upset in Game 1 when they came from behind to beat Sierra Leone 2-1 at the MKO Stadium in Abuja.

Alex Iwobi deftly cancelled out Jonathan Morsey’s header in the 11th minute before Victor Osimhen scored the winner just before half-time.

Sao Tome and Principe, on the other hand, were beaten on the same day, 5-1 in Guinea-Bissau despite taking an early lead.

Sao Tome and Principe have now lost 13 games in a row in all competitions, including each of their six matches in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers, where they scored just three goals and conceded 16 and finished last in group C.

They continue their quest to qualify to the African Cup of Nations for the first time ever against Nigeria, a tougher opponent.

Sao Tome vs Nigeria team news

Viegas, who opened his account for the national team against Guinea-Bissau is expected to lead the attack once again. He will be accompanied by Valter Rocha and Bolivia-based forward Leal, while Clube Oriental de Lisboa man Joel Neves could push for a starting role in midfield.

Despite their poor defensive performance against the Djurtus, Eusebio should stick to his centre-back pairing of Vava Pequeno and former Praia Cruz man Ivonaldo Viegas, with Anastacia Braganca starting in goal.

Meanwhile, Iwobi scored his first goal for Nigeria since November 2020 with his leveller against Sierra Leone last time out and the former Everton man should retain his place at the centre of the park alongside Rangers man Joe Aribo.

Osimhen maintained his red-hot goalscoring form and the Napoli striker should spearhead the attack on Monday, with the duo of Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon offering support on either flank.

Semi Ajayi and William Troost-Ekong have both started each of the Super Eagles’ last three outings and should partner once again, alongside Ola Aina and Calvin Bassey in the back four.
