On Tuesday, Qarabag FK will host FC Zurich in Azerbaijan for the opening leg of their second qualifying round clash of the UEFA Champions League.
Qarabag used home advantage to eliminate Polish champions Lech Poznan after trailing by one goal going into the second leg of their preliminary round game earlier this month. As a result, the Baku-based club’s newest bid to qualify for the Champions League proper for the second time remains viable. Qarabag were the first Azeri club to get to the group stage of Europe’s top event in 2017.
Meanwhile, FC Zurich has only appeared in the Champions League group stage once before, finishing fourth behind Real Madrid, Milan, and Marseille in 2009.
The Swiss Super League winners, whose domestic title defence began with a humiliating defeat on Saturday, are also two-time European Cup semi-finalists. After a four-year absence from any UEFA competition, Zurich will be eager to rub shoulders with the big boys again.
