Newcastle vs Liverpool: Match Preview & Betting Prediction

Match Preview

As Liverpool take on Newcastle at St. James Park, they will look to stay on piling pressure on Manchester City in the race to win the Premier League title.

The Reds did well in their last match to see off Villarreal and before that, in the Merseyside derby, defeat Everton. The defeat of both opponents who were defensively compact and resilient kept their hopes of reaching the Champions League final and winning the title respectively, alive.

Newcastle, on the other hand, look to have found their rhythm and will be hoping for a fifth consecutive league win when they host Liverpool.

In their last meeting, Liverpool came from behind to see them off 3 goals to one. Since then Liverpool has been within touching distance of Manchester City and Newcastle is 19 points above relegation and in the top half of the Premier League table with hopes of snatching a European competition slot.

Newcastle United

Newcastle in their last match easily dispatched Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road. This time they will be hosting a much superior opposition in Liverpool. But Liverpool will be making a huge mistake if they underestimate them because they are on a four-game winning streak that has moved them to the top half of the league.

A combination of effective January signings like Bruno Guimaraes and the brilliance of Eddie Howe have transformed Newcastle and moved them out of relegation battle.

The Magpies will rely largely on Bruno, who has been on fire for them – scoring three goals and an assist in their last three games – to make the difference. Also, Howe will depend heavily on left back Matt Targett to stop Mohammed Salah.

In their last four games, Newcastle has conceded just one goal and that is improvement in defensive compactness and resilience which will be tested to the maximum against Liverpool. Though, Newcastle is yet to suffer a Premier League defeat at St. James Park.

Liverpool

Liverpool won convincingly the last time they met Newcastle at Anfield. That said, they will be facing a different team that has more confidence and belief.

Liverpool stands a chance of temporarily going above Manchester City for a few hours before they host Leeds to top the table if they get a draw from this fixture because of their better goal difference. But we reckon the Reds will be gunning for all 3 points.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be banking on their consistent duo of Mohammed Salah, who is the top scorer in the Premier League with 22 goals and Sadio Mane, who has scored 4 goals in their last 5 matches to deliver them the 3 points. Alternatively, special ace cards like January signing Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota could come in good for Liverpool.

That said, Klopp will be faced with a selection dilemma in the final third. While he ponders on that, he’ll be hoping to keep their perfect away record in 2022 intact at Newcastle.

Newcastle United vs Liverpool: Team News

Newcastle coach is expected to line-up his side against Liverpool without long-term absentees in Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden, while Ryan Fraser fights to return early from his hamstring injury.

Howe and his team doctors will be sweating to get Joelinton who came off with a knock against Norwich to return to a deeper role that could see January signing Chris Wood come back into the team line-up with hopes to kick off his Newcastle goal scoring career. Also, Fabian Schar, Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron will all hope to be recalled to the starting line-up this weekend.

For Liverpool, Roberto Firmino is still recovering from a foot injury and is unlikely to feature in the match. Liverpool were also without Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas in midweek due to illness and they are likely to remain unavailable for selection.
