Match preview
On Tuesday night, two continental heavyweights will clash in the third round of the 2022-23 Champions League qualifiers, with Monaco hosting PSV Eindhoven at the Stade Louis II for the first leg.
Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 last season, while PSV finished second in the Eredivisie with two points behind the eventual winners, Ajax.
Both PSV and Monaco last appeared in the Champions League group stage in 2018-19. They’d be hoping to progress into the group stage this time around.
The appointment of former Club Brugge manager Philippe Clement at Monaco did not appear to be paying dividends at first. He’d later motivate his Monaco side to a nine-match win in their final ten top-flight games last season to make a late push for a Champions League spot with Aurelien Tchouameni being at the helm of Monaco’s late-season comeback.
However, the Frenchman will be wearing the white of Real Madrid this season after his successful €80m transfer to the club.
Ruud van Nistelrooy era at PSV Eindhoven began in an entertaining and fiery fashion when they squared up against Ajax on Saturday for the Johan Cruijff Schaal, which the KNVB-Beker holders came out on top with a 5-3 victory.
Going into this match, both sides will be hoping their current form won’t matter to the end result.
