Match preview
When they square off at the AMEX on Saturday, Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion will both be looking to pick up their winning streaks.
In their first two games of the new Premier League season, Brighton defeated Luton Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers by scores of 4-1 each. But last Saturday, August 26, at the AMEX, West Ham United humiliated them 1-3, yanking them back to the ground.
Despite having 78% of the possession and 10 shots on goal, only Pascal Gross was able to score for Brighton. His 81st-minute goal, though, was little more than a consolation for the Seagulls.
With goals from James Ward-Prowse, Jarrod Bowen, and Michail Antonio, the Hammers had already secured three points after executing a masterful counterattack on the other team’s ground.
This Saturday (September 2), when they face Newcastle United, who are coming off a disappointing performance themselves, Roberto De Zerbi’s team will have their job cut out for them.
Last Sunday, Eddie Howe’s team suffered a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Liverpool. In the 25th minute, Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies the lead by taking advantage of a defensive blunder by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Three minutes later, Virgil van Dijk received a straight red card for denying Gordon a clear chance to score. Newcastle was favoured to defeat the struggling Reds and get all three points, but Liverpool lifted the ante in the final stages of the game and completely destroyed them.
In order to thwart Newcastle’s ambitions and keep Liverpool’s unblemished start to the season, Darwin Nunez scored a fantastic brace. With a loss on Saturday, the Toons, who are now 13th in the standings, will have just three points after four games going into the first international break of the year.
